Banking & Payments Federation Ireland National Conference 2019

Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) today held its annual national conference, Delivering for the Customer at the Marker Hotel in Dublin. Hosting a gathering of key senior bankers, policy makers and other key stakeholders, the conference addressed the key themes of physical versus digital banking, the developing environment for banks and unlocking the potential of open banking.

In his opening address to the conference BPFI President, Gavin Kelly, highlighted the rapidly changing marketplace and technological environment in which retail banks are now operating and the challenge of adapting to customer demands and expectation in order to compete to stay relevant:

“We have witnessed huge transformation over the last 25 years in how retail banking services are delivered to customers.  Crucially, this transformation has been driven by customer preferences and demand. That’s set to continue… It is clear from current trends that any bank or financial service provider which does not embrace technology to meet customer expectations will struggle to remain relevant.  All providers – from traditional banks to digital banks, fintechs to big techs and other non-financial platform companies – are each developing their own strategy and approach to market.”

Sponsored by Accenture in Ireland, among those contributing to today’s conference were Michael O’Sullivan, Economist, Author of “The Levelling” and former Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director International Wealth Management Division, Credit Suisse, who gave his views on the current geopolitical and socioeconomic backdrop for banking; Vicky Godolphin, Head of Digital, Accenture Ireland who provided analysis on digital versus traditional banking and Ed Sibley, Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation, Central Bank of Ireland who spoke to the topic of the development environment for banks.
